Undoubtedly one of the most controversial, if not the most controversial video games of all time, Grand Theft Auto 5 has just become the highest grossing media title to date, amassing to $6 billion since its release in 2013.
The series of games have been criticized for its depiction of torture, misogynistic views of women, gang violence, and a lot more. However, industry specialists state these controversies are what has made it such a success and achieve its record-breaking sales around the globe.
To put the dollar value into perspective, the game has eclipsed every film ever made, this includes Star Wars and Gone with the Wind that has not even come close to the sales of Grand Theft Auto 5, even when making adjustments for inflation and DVD sales they pale in comparison.
GTA5 has been breaking a whole host of records each year since its release, including the most expensive video game to be developed with an approximate budget of $265 million and the fastest selling entertainment media ever when it accumulated over $800 million in 24 hours and broke the $1 billion mark after just three days.
Video game industry experts were astounded such was the success of the game which even after 5 years since its original release the game still dominates the games markets.
The game has become so successful that the developer Take-Two Interactive has yet to plan or develop a Grand Theft Auto 6 anytime soon. The game manages to still outsell most games every year and those sales figures do not include microtransactions within the game.
Red Dead Redemption 2 will be the next release for Rockstar Games, such is the draw of the company, other publishers have moved their launches so not to clash with the game’s release, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 by Activision was due for release in November but this has now been moved to October.
