Apple has released iOS 11.2.5, its latest software update for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.
Rather than simply containing typical bug fixes, iOS 11.2.5 is significant for a number of reasons.
First, it helps to protect against the devasting Spectre vulnerability that was discovered earlier this month and affects millions of devices around the world.
Secondly, it adds improved features to Siri, which can now give you a daily news podcast if you ask it about today’s news headlines.
If you say “Hey Siri, play the news”, you’ll hear a range of trending topics from news, business and sport.
You can download iOS 11.2.5 by going to Settings > General > Software update
Meanwhile, Apple has also revealed a host of new features coming to the next major update to its mobile operating system – iOS 11.3, which is due out later this year.
Arguably, the biggest update is that users will be able to check the health of their devices and offers suggestions how it can be serviced. This feature will be in Settings > Battery and will be available on all devices after and including the iPhone 6.
More Animojis will be available on the new version of iOS but these will only be open to iPhone X users. Animated emojis such as a dragon, bear, skull and lion will also be available.
In conjunction with the TrueDepth camera that captures facial movements, users will be able to send Animoji messages as one of 16 different characters.
Augmented reality will also be used more readily with advanced computer vision techniques to find and recognise the position of 2D images such as signs, posters, and artwork, ARKit can integrate these real world images into AR experiences such as filling a museum with interactive exhibits or bringing a movie poster to life.
A new Health Records feature could be extremely useful. It will bring together medical records from hospitals and clinics along with data collected in the existing Health app and keep all the information in one place.
Apple Music will also be updated making it “the home for music videos” without being disturbed by ads.
The Business Chat option will also be available in the Messages app and this will allow users to communicate with companies such as Hilton.
Apple hasn’t confirmed a launch date for iOS 11.3 but it has said the developer preview of iOS 11.3 is available to iOS Developer Program members starting today, followed by a public beta preview available at beta.apple.com.
iOS 11.3 will be available this spring as a free software update for iPhone 5s and later, all iPad Air and iPad Pro models, iPad 5th generation, iPad mini 2 and later and iPod touch 6th generation.
