Bus driver filmed playing mobile games whilst driving with elbows

In a sign that mobiles phones are proving very hard to put down for some people, British newspaper The Mirror published a story on Friday about a Kazakhstan bus driver who was filmed playing games on his mobile phone, while at the same time driving the bus with his elbows.

The driver, named as Klim Abdulov, was apparently driving around the Kazahkstani city of Aktobe, when he was filmed by one of the passengers, Natalia Tokhoniva. She later posted the video online where it was seen by local news outlets.

The driver has now been suspended by the bus company. The Mirror quotes Tokhoniva: “If anybody wonders why bus drivers seem to drive so crazily here in the city, take a look at this clip taken on the number 11 bus travelling down Patsaeva Street”, before adding “I was just going to get off when I saw as I got to the door that the driver was steering with his elbows playing on the phone at the same time.”

Driving Bus Playing Mobile

Besides endangering the lives of the passengers on his bus, it’s amazing to think that anyone in such a position would openly commit such an irresponsible act.

Is using a mobile phone while driving illegal?

In many countries, such as the UK, it’s illegal to even use a mobile whilst driving. The British government’s website has some clear guidelines on the matter:

It’s illegal to ride a motorcycle or drive using hand-held phones or similar devices. The rules are the same if you’re stopped at traffic lights or queuing in traffic. It’s also illegal to use a hand-held phone or similar device when supervising a learner driver or rider.

It goes on to say that drivers of buses could also get a maximum fine of £2,500 (approximately 128,000 THB) just for using a mobile.

In Thailand, various websites claim that “drivers may only use a mobile or cellular phones with a handsfree system”, and the World Health Organisation (WHO) states in its Thailand road safety status report (2013) that Thai law prohibits hand-held mobile phone use, but that it does not apply to hands-free systems.

Whatever you’re doing this Christmas and New Year, make sure that using a mobile while driving (or riding a motorcycle) isn’t one of them. Perhaps the Google self-driving car would be a good investment for anyone that wants to play games while sitting in the passenger seat?

I don’t know how a Thai bus driver could be safer using his hands and feet than using his elbows. I would never ride on a Thai bus.

Maybe the guy is on to a new and improved way. 🙂
