Dangerously close: Shocking footage shows drone in near miss with passenger jet


An incredible video shows the moment a drone narrowly misses a passenger jet as it attempts to land.

The footage shows the drone flying more than 400 feet from the ground and hovering dangerous close to a Frontier Airlines jet.

The incident took place at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas, although it is not known who or when the video was shot.

KNTV in Las Vegas reports that the police and FBI are treating the footage as legtimiate and are investigating.

Aviation website Air Transport World also reports that the the Federal Aviation Administration has launched its own investigation, with officials describing the acts of the person flying the drone as reckless.

“By all appearances, this is clearly and explicitly an illegal and reckless flight by a drone. The unmanned aircraft is above 400 ft., it is near an airport, and it is above another, manned aircraft—all gross violations of the rules that govern unmanned aviation.”

Meanwhile, drone users have also hit out at the person flying the drone.

Commenting on the footage, the Drone U website said “This pilot’s actions not only endangered the flying public but has the potential to discredit an entire industry.”

“It is the opinion of Drone U and its members that the pilot receive swift and just punishment for this example of irresponsible and reckless flight. There is no excuse for this type of criminal behavior.”

Some people commenting on YouTube have questioned if the footage is even real.

One comment read: “Is it from a video game?”

In Thailand, all private and commercial drone operators are required to be registered with strict penalties in place for anyone caught flying a drone in breach of the law.
