Facebook Messenger reaches an incredible milestone

Facebook Messenger now has a staggering 1.2 billion users worldwide, putting it on a par with WhatsApp, the other messaging app also owned by Facebook.

The number of users is a huge milestone for Facebook Messenger, given that the app was only launched in 2014 and many users were initially hesitant about using after Facebook separated its messaging platform and social network into two separate apps.

“I keep on hearing powerful stories about how our product is becoming a more important part of your daily lives,” David Marcus, head of messaging at Facebook, said in a post.

“So from all of us here at Messenger, a heartfelt thank you to all of you for giving us a chance to build something good and more meaningful for you.”

The Facebook Messenger of today is very different from the original version with Facebook having added a host of new features since its launch.

The messaging platform now includes video calling, games, stickers and its own chat bots. More recently, the company announced the launch of reaction emojis and live location tracking so users can easily see where their friends are. It also added a group payment option.

In February, Facebook announced that 400 million people use its video calling feature each month.
