Facebook Year in Review: Here’s what has been popular in 2014

With just 18 days left in 2014, it’s the time when you start to see all manner of lists on what’s been popular over the past year.

Yesterday, Google released its list of the most downloaded apps and movies in the Play Store, and today it’s Facebook’s turn to offer a review on what got its users talking in 2014.

The Facebook Year in Review shows that the popular social media site is not only about about embarrassing selfies, photos of food and babies or Candy Crush Saga.

Some of the most talked about events this year include the FIFA World Cup, Ebola and the Malaysian Airlines flight 17, which was shot down in the Ukraine in July.

The rest of the most talked about topics on Facebook are a mix of politics, current affairs, entertainment and sport.

In 2013, one of the most popular topics on Facebook was the Harlem Shake video, but by 2014, the viral meme was long forgotten.

If Facebook had delayed the release of its Year in Review, it would fair to assume the fallout from the recent hacking of Sony would feature somewhere in the top 10.
