Forget Oreo, here’s what the next version of Android could be called

The next version of Google’s Android operating system will be launched later this year and all we know so far is the name will begin with the letter ‘O’.

A recent rollout of the Android O Developer preview has been teasing users with potential names.

A leak posted under the section Android Previews on Reddit has hinted at the name ‘Android Octopus’. How accurate this is, is not known but the discovery has been credited to Reddit user ‘jaKz9’.

Usually, the name relates to a dessert such as Nougat, KitKat or Lollipop so most of the previous suggestions have pointed to Android Oreo or even Android Oatmeal Cookie.

However, the name Android Octopus was leaked in files found in the last Android O Developer Preview. Whilst not a dessert, octopus is certainly a food so the rumours may not be too far off the mark.

It is not the first time that Google has teased possible names.

Several names were suggested at a public poll last year for Android ‘N’ with the name being chosen at an Android N Naming Convention so few would be surprised if the same naming process was followed again this time around.

The name will need to be chosen soon as Android 8.0, or ‘Android N’, is due to be rolled out sometime during the next quarter. Not surprisingly, Google’s Pixel and Nexus devices will be the first to receive the new OS, followed by other Android flagship phones.
