There have been rumours that Samsung would launch a larger Galaxy S6 Edge for some time now, and today there’s been fresh details of what is being called the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, and it looks almost identical to the regular Galaxy S6 Edge without the speaker hole.
Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus leaks
The main picture in this article was just shared on Twitter by @OnLeaks with a caption that reads: #Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus (approx. 154.45 × 75.80 × 6.85 mm (suggesting 5.5″ screen))”.
The device, if it’s real, means that the company’s device are starting to overlap even more closely. The rumours initially said the S6 Edge Plus would have a 5.5-inch screen, just 0.2-inches smaller than last year’s Galaxy Note 4. Then, they said the device would have a screen size of 5.7-inches, which is the same as the Note 4, but after today’s leaks everyone is back to thinking it will 5.5-inches again.
The S6 today isn’t that much more expensive than the Note, so perhaps Samsung might be crowding out their own smartphone segment if the only differences between the Galaxy S and Note lines is the S-Pen.
However, one possibility is that the main draw of the Note lineup isn’t the screen size, but more the features for stylus usage. When there’s a choice between one of these devices and one of similar size that doesn’t sacrifice to make room for the stylus and its software, there might be enough people to fit into both groups. Some people may of course think the stylus is rather gimmicky, but it’s already been proven by the popularity of large devices that there’s a real demand for them. With another device with a larger screen than the S6 and S6 Edge but without the stylus, there may be new customers for Samsung to sell to.
Many on Reddit believe that Samsung will standardise its lineup under the Galaxy S brand, as follows:
- Galaxy S6
- Galaxy S6 Edge
- Galaxy S6 Active
- Galaxy S6 Note
- Galaxy S6 Note Edge
Besides all the speculation, rumoured specs of the new device include a Snapdragon 808 processor, a 16 megapixel rear camera and a 5 megapixel front camera. Recently there were rumours saying that Samsung will release the new Note in August, with the new S6 Edge Plus coming in July, but Samsung has confirmed the Note will be unveiled in September at the IFA trade show in Berlin, so the release dates are still up in the air.
