Today Samsung announced that Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge owners can order the Gear VR Innovator Edition online for $199, via the Samsung website or (at least in the USA BestBuy.com). The new virtual reality device won’t be available in retail stores until mid May however.
Gear VR now available online
The Gear VR was first announced at Mobile World Congress in March at the same time as the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, and of course works with both of those devices.
In terms of hardware, to preserve your phone’s battery life, it includes a microUSB port to power the unit separately. Samsung says it’s also more comfortable than the original model which only works with the Galaxy Note 4.
If you’re not familiar with the Gear VR, it’s a pretty simple concept – drop your phone in, strap it on your head, and you can then play games and view video in full 360 degrees virtual reality.
However, while that sounds great, there isn’t yet much content available for the Gear VR, but Samsung has some titles on offer in its Samsung App Store and via the Samsung Milk VR app.
YouTube also has some 360 degree videos that work with the Gear VR’s accelerometer, which are supposedly an amazing experience.
Knowing that the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset won’t hit the shelves until early 2016, and that they are behind Samsung’s system, $199 seems like a pretty decent price for a chance to be on the cutting edge of virtual reality technology.
