The Google Play Store has been protected from over 700,000 apps which were deemed to be malicious, on top of that some 100,000 ‘bad developers’ have also been blocked this has all been achieved by the way Google uses its AI protocols. This figure is a massive rise of 70% compared to 2016.
The new algorithms put in place by Google meant 99% of the apps were blocked before any installations by the end user could be done.
Product Manager at Google Play Andrew Ahn explains “Google Play is committed to providing a safe experience for billions of Android users to find and discover such apps. Over the years, this commitment has made Google Play a more trusted and safer place. Last year we’ve more than halved the probability of a user installing a bad app, protecting people and their devices from harm’s way, and making Google Play a more challenging place for those who seek to abuse the app ecosystem for their own gain.”
Google has always strived to allow the Play Store to be an open environment and continues to commit to this.Their fiercest rivals the Apple Store has always used manual vetting for all apps submitted.
The Play Store has always come under criticism for the apparent Malware issues but it’s worth to point out that the big majority of rogue apps actually originate from other 3rd party app stores across the globe with China being one of the biggest culprits.
Google Play Protect was launched to combat malware within their app store. The anti-malware is embedded within Google Play Services and to date is estimated to have prevented over 500,000 apps from finding their way on to a user’s Android device, this achievement is even more incredible considering the software ranks amongst the bottom when being compared to other mobile protection apps.
Andrew Ahn further commented “Despite the new and enhanced detection capabilities that led to a record-high takedown of bad apps and malicious developers, we know a few still manage to evade and trick our layers of defence. We take these extremely seriously and will continue to innovate our capabilities to better detect and protect against abusive apps and the malicious actors behind them. We are committed to making Google Play the most trusted and safe app store in the world.”
It was recently announced that this new technology from Google will also be able to block any apps from running that are found to have any malicious code written into them, this will also include apps that haven’t come from the play store.
