Google Hangouts is finally getting its own dedicated website: hangouts.google.com
The new site is a full-fledged web client, with all the same features that are offered by the service on smartphones, such as voice and audio calls. For anyone that has used Hangouts on Gmail, the user interface looks mainly the same, but the main difference is that there’s a larger contacts list and a random ‘inspiring’ wallpaper.
Here’s what Google had to say about it:
We are launching another way to use Hangouts today. From our new site you’ll be able to take advantage of the best of Hangouts in the browser, along with an inspiring image to get you through the day – Google.
In the past the only way to access Hangouts on a PC were using a Chrome browser extension, a Chrome desktop app or via one of Google’s services like Gmail or Google+.
The new web app has links to the mobile apps and a Chrome one to ensure you can stay connected to Hangouts on all your devices.
It’s rather surprising that the new site hasn’t been launched much earlier. But many people will no doubt welcome the web interface – it’s pretty handy if you want to access your Hangouts chats without someone looking over your shoulder at your emails or Google account, or if you just want to chat with friends without all the associated clutter of email and social media feeds.
