There have been some strange goings-on at Google Maps this week. A user on Hacker News found what looks like the Android logo peeing on Apple in the maps view.
Google Maps oddities
At these co-ordinates in Pakistan, the odd image can be found, which depicts the famous Android logo relieving itself on an Apple logo. It was initially thought to be Google’s idea of a joke, but it seems that it was added by a user, much like the Edward’s Snow Den that appeared in the White House several weeks ago.
The image was not visible in the satellite area view, and so it looks like it was only made to the map view of the region. The image has now hurriedly been removed, and it appears that a Twitter user spotted the fact that the change was added via Google’s Map Maker tool and managed to slip through the approval process.
This is how the map area looks today:
A Google spokesperson said that the company was “sorry for this inappropriate user-created content; we’re working to remove it quickly” and that “the vast majority of users who edit our maps provide great contributions”.
Google also said that they’re learning from such issues, and are constantly improving how they detect, prevent and handle bad listings.
Was it a joke too far, or a bit of harmless fun? Nevertheless, it just goes to show that you can’t always believe what you see on the Internet, not even from a huge company like Google.
