Handy WhatsApp update is great news if you watch YouTube videos

WhatsApp is working on a new feature that will allow YouTube videos to be played directly from the messaging app.

Currently, if you open a YouTube link in WhatsApp it takes up the whole screen meaning that you can no longer view messages.

According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp are working on a hidden feature in the iOS version that will go live as soon as it is ready.

When the feature does become available, you will be able to watch YouTube videos in picture-in-picture mode inside chats.

The video window can be moved around the window without the need for pausing as well as being able to be resize with a pinch.

“How many times did you receive a YouTube link on WhatsApp and you were annoyed that WhatsApp opened YouTube to view it?”, WABetaInfo wrote in a blog post.

“Finally this won’t happen anymore: this new feature implemented in WhatsApp uses the Picture in Picture concept to view YouTube videos without opening it.”

Of Apple’s smartphones, WABetaInfo says the feature may only come to the iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

The reason given for this is because the Apple devices have larger screens than many other smartphones – something that is required for the feature to work properly.

There’s no word yet on whether or not the functionality will come to Android users too.
