Here’s what the grey and blue ticks mean on WhatsApp

WhatsApp, the most popular messaging app in the world, has just added an array of new features.

Some of its most recent updates now allow users to leave voicemail when a call is rejected, as well as being able to add basic formatting such as bold, italic and strikethrough to text.

As well as text and images, WhatsApp users are now also able to send video, PDF and voice messages to friends.

However, before you start using WhatsApp’s newest features, you might want to get to grip with some of the basics.

One of the things that makes WhatsApp so popular is that it is so simple to use.

However, after we were prompted by a question in our tech forum, one of WhatsApp’s earliest and perhaps most simple features seems to have some users stumped.

This particular feature is something that you will definitely have seen if you have ever used the messaging app.

Have you ever wondered what the grey and blue ticks that appear on your WhatsApp message actually mean?

WhatsApp introduced its tick feature back in 2014.

Here's what the grey and blue ticks mean in Whatsapp

From Whatsapp FAQ

The grey and blue ticks indicate if your message has been sent, received or read by the recipient.

The ticks appear next to each message you send.

If you see one grey tick it means your message was sent successfully.

Two grey ticks means that your message has been delivered to the recipient.

Two blue ticks means that the recipient has read your message.

If you are sending a message to a group, the second blue tick only appears when everyone in that group has received the message.

But what if you are on the receiving end of a message and don’t want someone to know you have read their message?

Maybe you are trying to avoid one of your WhatsApp contacts but still want to read the message they have sent you without giving the game away?

Here’s how you can read a WhatsApp message without displaying the blue ticks

  • When you receive a message, do not open it and immediately dismiss any notifications on your homescreen.
  • Put your phone into Airplane Mode
  • Next, open up WhatsApp and read the message in question
  • Once read, full close the app and turn off Airplane Mode. Even though you have read the message, the blue ticks will not appear.

However, if you want to banish blue ticks from WhatsApp forever, there is a way to disable read receipts from WhatsApp for good.

To do this you will need to open WhatsApp then go to Settings > Account > Privacy and untick Read Receipts

Be warned though, by doing this you will also not be able to see read receipts from your Whatsapp contacts, meaning you will have no idea if they have read your message, then again, perhaps that is not such a bad thing!
