Social media first came onto the scene about 10 years ago and has gone from strength to strength in that short space of time.
It now plays a huge role in all of our lives, allowing us to connect with friends and family around the world, so imagine the damage that could be done if you account was hacked and your personal data stolen.
Frighteningly, it is all too easy to do, just click on the wrong link or have a weak password so here are a few suggestions to help secure your social media accounts.
1. Use strong passwords
This is something that we pick up on a lot but the need is so great that it can’t be over emphasised. Use upper and lower case, digits and symbols to have a truly secure password.
2. Friend requests
Only accept friend requests if you actually know the person. Often hackers send friend requests to gain more access to you information.
Be careful what you share as well as what links get shared with you. Remember what is posted will remain there forever so don’t indicate when you might be away or when you are not at home.
4. Discard unused applications
Delete any applications that you don’t use. They may have access to personal data so make sure that you know what any apps have access to and make sure that you are comfortable with it.
5. Use Security Software
Make sure you use a good virus checker that also protects against Malware. There are plenty on the market so do your research
6. Multi-factor authentication
This adds a considerable amount of protection and will mean that hackers need more than one piece of information to attack your accounts. Fingerprint scanners are a great example.
