HTC One M9 with 20MP camera unveiled at MWC 2015

HTC has officially unveiled its flagship smartphone for the coming year – the HTC One M9.

The name was already known, but the Chinese company has also largely kept to the same formula for the new phone, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

HTC One M9 announced

The new version of the HTC one has the same single piece of scratch resistant metal for the chassis, but there’s a new subtle colour band which runs around the sides of the new phone. It’s so subtle in fact that you probably won’t even notice it.

In terms of hardware, the HTC One M9 has a 5-inch Full HD display, and an 8 core Qualcomm 810 Snapdragon CPU, 3 GB of RAM, 32 GB of internal storage and a 4 Megapixel front camera. There’s also 100 GB of free Google Drive space included.

On the back, there’s a 20 Megapixel sensor with a dual-LED flash, with the same fast autofocus method as the front camera, and the ability to take more detailed photos in low-light conditions.

HTC has also focused on media and sound capabilities for the new phone, so there’s still dual front speakers and a high resolution display for images, games and movies.

As for the audio, the BoomSound speakers support Dolby (not Beats) this time, as well as support for hi-re 24-bit audio. The company has changed from Beats to Dolby mainly because Apple bought the audio company in 2014.

Sense 7 UI

HTC has also demonstrated the new Sense 7 UI, which is a customisation on top of Android. It gives the ability to generate your own themes – by taking a photo that you have taken and analysing the image to make suggestions for the theme.

There’s also a new OneGallery app which makes it simpler to track photos on different devices and cloud storage services. It basically connects with your existing services and grabs a thumbnail of each image, to save space on the phone.

Release date

The company says the HTC One M9 will be available from March 31 in the Europe and US, but there were no details on pricing, though it’s definitely expected to have a premium price tag. It will be offered in silver, gunmetal grey and gold.
