Instagram changes prove unpopular with users

The recent planned changes to how Instagram’s content will displayed on its app has proved to be extremely unpopular with many users.

The move will see app change to “algorithmic timelines”, moving away from posts being listed chronologically to sorting posts according to user’s interests.

This will bring Instagram in line with Facebook (which is owned by the same company) in the way that news feeds are displayed.

The decision has seen some celebrities including Kylie Jenner and Cindy Crawford request that their followers turn on notifications to ensure than none of their posts are missed and indeed a post by Jenner criticising the change received more than 17,000 comments.

The general consensus seems to be one of “if it’s not broke, don’t fix it” and an online petition has even emerged calling for Instagram to keep everything in chronological order and so far this has attracted more 317,000 signatures.

Whilst there have been several requests for people to “turn on notifications” there have a number of users who have found these frustrating and “annoying”.

The movement to “turn off notifications” appears to another growing body with many people claiming that they are tired of being told what to do with one US based tweeter writing “I’m tired of everyone telling me what to do on Instagram today,” claiming that she would be turning all notifications off.

The move has certainly caused some controversy and only time will tell if Instagram execs will be swayed by public opinion but at present it appears that they are remaining steadfast with the changes with little or no prospect of them backing down on the horizon.
