LG releases a new flip-phone called “Gentle”

LG, maker of mobile phones, televisions and air conditioning units, said on Wednesday that it will sell its latest flip-phone (or “clamshell” design) in Europe this week, following its release in the firm’s native South Korea last month.

The LG Gentle will be available in Europe (and later areas like Russia and Uzbekistan) for around $170, the company said in a statement.

Foldable LG smartphone

LG’s Gentle phone has been available in Korea since July, and is quite unusual in today’s smartphone market as it uses a flip design that was popular in Asia (especially Japan) 10 – 15 years ago in its heyday.

The Gentle something of a low-end model, but quoting marker research company GfK, LG said that flip phones still account for 20% of the entire smartphone market, and that there’s plenty of growth opportunities with a cheaper model.

It may be a suitable choice for those people looking for a robust device, without needing to have the latest and greatest hardware. Having said that, it does come with a 3.2-inch display and offers a 3 megapixel camera on the rear. It also ships with Android 5.1 Lollipop, and has a fairly respectable 1.1 GHz quad core processor, as well as a detachable battery – another rarity in modern smartphones.

No word yet on a Thai release date – it’s currently not listed on the LG Thailand website.
