LG has announced the LG Watch Urbane. The luxury smartwatch will allow the company to compete with the Apple Watch, which will go on sale in April. LG’s watch will launch officially in March at the Mobile World Congress.
The LG G Watch R, another model from the company, is one of the best sellers in the niche. Data has shown that 720,000 watches dubbed “Android Wear” have shipped in the last 12 months. Data shows that consumers buy the most expensive and stylish watches, which is what LG is aiming to provide.
Few details have been given by the company in terms of price, but consumers have been told that the watch will feature a slim stainless steel body that can be in a silver or gold finish. The band will be stitched leather. Water and dust resistant, the watch can also monitor the wearer’s heart rate and pulse. A full circular display and a barrow bezel much like the G R Watch will be used with the Urbane.
The leather strap can be replaced for a 22mm band.
Initial reports show that much of the watches’ internal features will be the same as the G Watch R. A 1.3-inch display and a 1.2 GHz processor will power the watch. Users will be able to enjoy 4GB of storage and 512 MB of RAM.
Built to be wearable, the Urbane is meant to look exactly like a luxury watch with only the wearer being able to tell it’s a smartwatch. Juno Cho, CEO of LG, stated that the Urbane is a step into the everyday accessory and not part of the wearable electronic gadgets that have pushed consumers away in the past.
LG hopes that the Urbane will fill the gap between smartwatches and style that has largely been missing from other smartwatch models.
