Lizard Squad claims responsibility for Facebook hack

The infamous hacking group Lizard Squad has claimed responsibility for a series of unexplained outages on popular websites including Facebook and Instagram.

Reports first started circulating on Twitter around about 13:30 (Bangkok time) from people unsuccessfully trying to access Facebook.

It then became clear that Facebook wasn’t the only site experiencing problems, with Sky News reporting that Instagram, Tinder and Hipchat were also offline.

After being down for almost an hour, a message appeared on the Lizard Squad Twitter account which appeared to claim responsibility for the attack.

The message read: “Facebook, Instagram, Tinder, AIM, Hipchat #offline #LizardSquad “.

The sites which have more than one billion monthly users were unable to load, with users greeted with a blank page.

A message posted to the Instagram Twitter page, which confirmed the site was experiencing problems read: “We’re aware of an outage affecting Instagram and are working on a fix. Thank you for your patience.”

Earlier this month, the Lizard Squad said it successfully hacked the website of Malaysian Airlines.
