“Loophole” has allowed loads of porn videos to be uploaded to YouTube

Despite strict rules regarding adult content, thousands of pornographic videos have been found on YouTube, and apparently Google had no idea they were there.

And if that wasn’t bad enough, much of the adult content is reportedly from copyrighted sources, meaning it also breaches YouTube’s strict copyright rules.

According to tech site TorrentFreak, porn pirates have discovered a loophole that allowed them to upload the videos onto YouTube.

The loophole meant that videos could be hosted on YouTube’s servers whilst bypassing Google’s usual vetting process.

Normally when a video is uploaded to YouTube, Google’s servers scan the content with its special identification software to weed out inappropriate and copyrighted content.

However, this process only takes place if a video is made public.

This most recent problem has occurred because the uploaded porn videos were not made public. Despite this, pirates were still able to embed the videos onto other websites.

While porn videos were found to be among the biggest abusers of the loophole, lots of other pirated content, including feature films and TV shows was also found to be uploaded to YouTube’s servers.

According to adult content maker Dreamroom Productions the uploading of copyrighted content to YouTube is a real problem and it apparently takes YouTube too long to respond to a takedown request.

Because of this Dreamroom described YouTube as “one of the world’s largest databased of copyright infringing material,” and asked for the site to end its private sharing function, which is currently being exploited by content pirates.

In response a spokeswoman for YouTube told the BBC: “We have teams around the world that review flagged content, regardless of whether it is private, public or unlisted. Content that violates our policies is quickly removed.”
