How a mobile app can help you bag an entire row to yourself when flying in economy

When travelling in economy on a long haul flight you’ll do almost anything to make it that little bit more comfortable.

From familarising yourself with these scientific tips to help you get some sleep to making sure you bag yourself an aisle seat so you can take advantage of this little known method that will ensure you get some extra room, we all have our own ways to make the journey more bearable.

But now a travel blogger has revealed how you can use your smartphone to ensure you get the ultimate travel experience when flying in economy.

Writing on his God Save the Points website, blogger Gilbert Ott revealed how he uses an app called ExpertFlyer to ensure he gets the perfect seat whenever he is travelling in economy.

Ott says that he has used this tip to not only bag himself a nice window seat but also a whole row of seats to himself – on more than one occasion.

Ott says that the app “allows users to view up-to-the-moment seating charts and, better yet, allows users to set alerts for when and if their ideal seat pops up.”

This enables him to know where the free seats are on the plane. By using the alerts, Ott says he plays a kind of “musical chairs”, constantly changing his seat in order to give him the best possible chance of being next to one which is empty.

“If the best seat in the house is available immediately — book it. If not, get the next best available seat — and set free alerts on ExpertFlyer for any and all the seats you’d prefer. By doing so, you can keep improving up until final boarding”.

Ott is well known for sharing ‘travel hacks’ or tips on how to make air travel a better experience.

Now we haven’t tried Ott’s tip ourselves but it’s surely worth giving a go if you want a bit of extra room in economy!
