Facebook has launched a new group video chat feature in its Messenger app.
This may not sound particularly ground-breaking but they hope to differentiate themselves from the competitors by allowing up to 50 people to chat at any one time – far greater than the ten normally allowed by their competitors.
The new feature is addition to the group calling feature it added to Messenger last year.
Messenger is one of Facebook’s most lucrative tools as it has over one billion users worldwide.
Starting a group video chat couldn’t be easier – simply open up an existing group chat or start a new one.
Next, you need to tap on the camera icon in the top right corner of the screen and everyone in the group will be notified – and can then also join the chat with a single tap.
You can even choose to chat to just one person within the group if you so wish.
The new feature is already available to iOS and Android users although you do need to have updated your app to the latest version.
The downside of the new service is that 50 users is far too many to appear on a smartphone so only the first six users in the group chat will see each other in split-screen.
If more than six users join a call, then only the person speaking at that time will be displayed.
Facebook has also released Messenger Lite, for users with older devices which have memory and lower powered processors. Lite will also work in areas that have slower than average internet speeds.
