New self driving electric model brings iconic VW Camper Van back to life

We all love the VW camper and a new, self-driving, electric-powered eight-seater model is due to be launched in 2022.

The updated version of the retro motor has plenty of impressive features whilst still retaining the feel of the original version that VW launched at the Geneva Motor Show in 1949.

The new model retains its legendary shape, sliding doors and two-tone paint design but it now has a band of LED lights to separate the colours, a cool back-lit VW logo and massive 22-inch alloy wheels.

The performance is also far more modern with the vehicle going from 0-92kph in less than five seconds and has a maximum speed of 160kph.

The self drive feature gives the driver the opportunity to turn around in 180-degree swivel chair and the rails in the floor allow other seats to be moved backwards and forwards.

“While the driver relaxes, laser scanners, ultrasonic and radar sensors and cameras monitor other road users and the surroundings”, Volkswagen said in a statement.

When not in use the steering wheel and be moved into the dashboard to then become a touchscreen, while the eight passenger seats can be easily transformed into a comfortable yet smart dining area.

The van, the I.D. Buzz will be unveiled at the Detroit Motor Show and follows in the footsteps of the I.D. Concept which was revealed at the Paris Motor Show last September.

The I.D. Buzz can travel 600km on a single charge and its fast charge technology means it can charge 80 percent of its battery in just 30 minutes from its 150kW charger.
