Emoji is definitely on the rise as a language used by millions, maybe even billions, of people all over the world. More of us are using it every year, mostly on mobile phones, and the symbols are all over social media sites such as Facebook and Instagram. Even Hollywood movie studios are using it to promote their movies…

Emoji use on the rise, teenagers rejoice

Everybody seems to be using emoji now, and it’s certainly a fun way to spice up your text messages. But every year, the body that oversees the official emoji characters, the Unicode Consortium, releases a list of new candidates for consideration in the next version. And the new set of characters is now slated to appear in 2016.

Currently, companies that are part of the consortium include Adobe, Apple, Google, Huawei, IBM, Microsoft, Oracle and Yahoo!…

Just like the Oxford English Dictionary adds new words each year, so the Unicode Consortium adds more emoji based on popular language. In the new list are symbols for bacon, avocado, selfie and shrug. There is also a face palm character, a man dancing and the always great rolling on the floor laughing. The list may in fact change however before the release of “Unicode 9” next year.
