This year, the wearables industry is hotly anticipating the soon-to-be-release Apple Watch, but smart watch maker Pebble continues to develop its own platform and appears unfazed about Apple’s entry into the space.
Pebble sells a million, CEO not fazed by Apple Watch
In an interview with The Verge, Pebble’s CEO Eric Migicovsky discussed the company’s new hardware plans for 2015, as well as some more details about just how well the did in 2014. Pebble has done rather well in fact, as it managed to sell its one millionth Pebble watch on December 31st last year, helped in part by some price reductions and some great new apps which were introduced in recent months.
As noted by The Verge, Pebble was up against stiff competition last year, mainly from Google’s Android Wear devices, but the times are about to get a lot tougher in April when Apple is expected to finally release its much-hyped Apple Watch.
However, the Pebble CEO is not fazed by the Apple Watch release, and instead discusses how the company’s new devices, released later this year, will offer vastly different experiences than anything else on the market.
“We’ve found a new framework to use as an interaction model on the watch,” says Migicovsky, and that while apps will continue to exist on Pebble, they won’t be the main focus. “It doesn’t look like what we have today, and it doesn’t look like what’s on your smartphone”, he said.
A very successful 2014
Migicovsky proudly points out that Pebble had a very successful 2014, and managed to double its sales figures in the past year. He also says that Pebble fans will have to wait until “later in 2015” for more details on the new devices we can expect.
The company, which got started thanks to donations on crowd-funding site Kickstarter, seems to be taking the same stance that it did when the Apple Watch was announced – in other words, be more competitive on prices, update the website to make the products look more sexy, and attempt to disparage the opposition by pointing out why their products are inferior.
Pebble is a great smart watch, which is surely going to get even better this year. As the smart watch market just starts to hot up in 2015, it will be interesting to see new and better products released as the year goes on.
