Popular free VPN service Opera VPN is to shut down at the end of the month, the company has confirmed.

Users of its the app are now being shown an on screen prompt informing them of the closure.

As a consolation Opera is offering an 80 percent discount to users of Surf Easy Total VPN, while subscribers to Opera’s premium service will be given the option of a free one year subscription to Surf Easy Ultra VPN.

According to Opera, Surf Easy is available in 28 regions and can be used on up to 5 devices per account. It also has a strict no-log policy.

Launched two years ago with the promise that it would always be free, the announcement that Opera VPN is to close will disappoint users.

If you have been using Opera VPN, you’re going to need to find an alternative. There are plenty of free VPN services to choose from but you should do your research prior to installing them on your device.

While some VPNs are free of charge, there could be hidden costs of your using them.

Recently, some free VPN services have been accused of selling user data to third party advertisers – remember free services need to make money somehow.

For this reason, those take their online privacy more seriously than most should probably consider a paid for VPN service.

RIP Opera VPN.
