Samsung Gear VR will finally be available to consumers for the first time on Friday as the new gadget hits Best Buy outlets. The VR headset turns a Galaxy Note 4 into a virtual reality experience. The Innovator Edition of the Gear VR will be offered exclusively through Best Buy outlets and will retail for $199.99.
While the Gear VR is designed for developers, the device can be used by anyone – providing you have a Galaxy Note 4 smartphone. You can purchase the phone for an additional $200 with a contract.
The VR headset was unveiled last fall and doesn’t have its own display or processor like other headsets. Instead, the Gear VR uses the Galaxy Note 4’s processor and display to turn the headset into a projector capable of 4K playback and a 360-degree view.
News of the Gear VR’s release comes just after Facebook announced its plans to start supporting 360-degree videos in its newsfeeds. Facebook actually demoed the Gear VR at its F8 Developers Conference on Wednesday to demonstrate how 360-degree videos will look on the social network.
Along with the Galaxy Note 4, the Gear VR will also be compatible with the Galaxy S6 Edge and Galaxy S6, which will be released in the U.S. in early April.
