Samsung unveils new high end Android flip phone

Just when you thought they were all but a distant memory, Samsung has gone and launched its new high end W2017 Android flip phone.

In fact, flip phones are still readily available in many parts of Asia, with leading brands such as LG having released new flip phone handsets over the past year.

Of course, a Samsung flip phone may not be all that new – after all they launched a dual-display Android flip phone in November last year which was known as the W2016 but it was only ever released in China

The device proved to be less popular than the other devices, but there must still have been something there to give Samsung some encouragement as they have just announced the W2017 that will have a dual-display and fingerprint scanner.

To give you an idea about the specs, the Samsung W2017 is a dual SIM device that comes with a 4.2 inch Super AMOLED display with a 1080x1920p, full HD screen resolution.

It is powered by the quadcore Snapdragon 820 SoC processor, has 64GB of built in storage that can be expanded to 256GB and 4GB of RAM. The OS is the Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow.

When it comes to the cameras the W2017 has a 12MP rear camera that supports 4K video recording and a 5MP front selfie camera. It also offers Wi-Fi 802.11ac, 4G LTE connectivity, Bluetooth v4.1, and a micro-USB port that also acts as a headphone jack.

The battery is a 2300mAh affair that is expected to have a standby time of 64 hours and an ‘always on’ display. It is also capable of fast wireless charging and has sensors for heart rate, an accelerometer, ambient light sensor, magnetometer, barometer, proximity sensor, and gyroscope.

The device is only expected to be released in China and estimated to cost around CNY 20,000 (a whopping THB100,000!).
