South Korean technology giant Samsung said today that it will release a new version of its Gear VR virtual reality headset that works with its latest Galaxy S6 smartphones.
The new Samsung Gear VR will be slightly smaller than the previous version – that links with a Galaxy Note 4 via a micro USB port. It will also be available for purchase at around $230 starting on Thursday this week, and available in white only.
Samsung Gear VR for Galaxy S6
The initial version of the Gear VR was shown off in August last year, and apparently sold out on the day of its debut in the US in December. There is no word however on actual numbers of units shipped, but virtual reality is undergoing something of a resurgence of late, what with headsets from Facebook-owned Oculus Rift and others from Sony in development.
Samsung’s Gear VR provides 360 degree rotating vision and a 96 degree field of view, which creates quite a lifelike experience for the wearer. It can also link with the Galaxy S6 Edge (besides the normal S6 model) which has a curved screen at both sides, though that won’t make any difference in terms of the virtual reality experience.
Samsung’s Galaxy S6 series, which launched last month, come with a 5.1-inch Quad HD super active mode LED, which is said to be one of the very best screens on the market. Using that with the VR headset should provide quite an immersive and high quality experience.
