Sony overhauls Xperia line up, announces new Xperia X and Xperia XA handsets

There are always plenty of surprises at the MWC and this year was certainly no different but perhaps the surprise was that it was Sony stealing a few headlines.

The new look Xperia X and Xperia XA smartphones are set to replace the Xperia Z family as the main flagship for Sony.

The Sony Xperia X and Xperia XA models are said to include features that “embodies Sony Mobile’s new brand vision”.  The company says its new flagships include a next generation camera technology, battery and design and takes Sony in a new direction, an approach which for some is long overdue.

Xperia X

In terms of design, the Sony Xperia X and Xperia XA can be seen as an improvement from last year’s series. Blocky straight lines have been replaced with neat rounded edges.

The Xperia X features a curved glass display whilst the Xperia XA model has an edge-to-edge display. Both models are 5 inches in size from corner to corner, the X model has a Full HD screen whilst the XA has 720p display and they both measure an easy to handle 7.9mm in thickness.

The camera technology has certainly been taken to another level in the X model boasting a whopping  23MP rear camera and a 13MP front camera are one of the stand out features. The XA model should certainly not be envious of its stable mate offering a not too shabby 13MP rear camera and 8MP front camera.

When it comes to processors the Xperia family may come in for a little bit of criticism. The Xperia X has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 and the XA has a Mediatek MT6755 octacore processor both of which are somewhat inferior to the Snapdragon 800 series that is in some of the other brands.

Xperia X Performance

Other points of note, both phones include MicroSD slot for up to 200GB of storage and Sony has said that it new Xperia series will offer 2 day battery life.

There is no word yet on an official release date in Thailand, although the Xperia X has been made available for pre-order in Germany with a price tag of EUR 599, roughly 23,300 Baht.
