Sony could release “The Interview” on Internet sharing site BitTorrent

With all the recent shenanigans about the movie “The Interview” and the claims that North Korea hacked Sony in an attempt to block the movie’s release, many people have said that Sony should instead release it online. In a swathe of recent publicity, Sony pulled the movie, a move which led President Obama to call it “a mistake”. The film was originally scheduled to be released in the U.S. on Christmas day.

Sony already stated it would look at alternative ways to release the film, and some people have suggested popular video subscription sites such as Netflix or Amazon.

“Sony has been fighting to get this picture distributed. it will be distributed. How it’s going to be distributed I don’t think anyone knows quite yet,” said Sony’s lawyer David Boies.

A BitTorrent release?

BitTorrent Site

BitTorrent has since come forward and offered Sony the possibility of releasing the movie (which basically revolves around the assassination of Kim Jong-un) on its own file-sharing network. It said a BitTorrent Bundle could be the most effective way to appease the public who are now clamouring for the release of the film, as well as Sony’s wish to release it despite the decision to cancel (at least for now) its theatrical release.

Bundle is basically a way for anyone to publish, and they could even use Paygate as an option to set the price and release it without ruffling any more feathers or subjecting cinemas to threats from various cyber criminals. BitTorrent Bundle is a very safe (and legal) mechanism that Sony could use to release the film – it’s different from sites like the Pirate Bay – as instead of illegally sharing files, the bundles are a collection of files that can be shared and downloaded completely legalls for free or profit, by the authors or site in charge. It was also used recently by Thom Yorke of British band Radiohead to release his latest album in September.

Apparently, BitTorrent has already reached out to Sony to make the offer but has not yet received a response…

If it’s as unfunny a comedy as Sony’s others, the controversy surrounding its release will likely stop it sinking without trace.
