After a tweet from Sony Xperia yesterday that teased a new way to capture split-second photos due on August 3rd, there are new leaked images of an Android-powered Xperia C5 Ultra and an M5. The leaks came from Russian site Mail.ru and were in the reviews section of their site with timestamps suggesting August 3rd. However, the pictures have now been taken down.
Various tech sites have already managed to capture details of the post before it was taken down, and there were images of some of the new phones including the Xperia C5 Ultra and the Xperia M5.
Leak teases new Sony smartphones
The 6-inch C5 Ultra is the follow-on to the 5.5-inch Xperia C4, which is known for being a great selfie phone with a front 28mm wide angle camera (with a Sony Exmor R sensor) and a front flash. The difference between the C4 and the C5 Ultra seems to be the ultra-slim 0.8mm bezel around the screen, in comparison with 2.2mm on the C4. It also has a 13 megapixel wide angle front camera (as opposed to a 5 megapixel one on the C4. The lack of bezel means most of the front is taken up by the screen.
Other specs for the C5 Ultra appear to be an 8-core MediaTek processor at 1.7 GHz, 2 GB of RAM,and 16 GB of storage. Besides that there’s dual SIM card support, and memory can be expanded by a microSD card up to 128 GB. Battery capacity comes in at a respectable 2,930 mAh, an increase from 2,600 mAh in the C4, and is said to last 2 days on a single charge using the new STAMINA power management from Sony. The front is glass, and the sides are aluminium – however the back is a kind of glossy plastic.
The second phone in the leak was the Xperia M5, which looks similar to the Z3+ (also called the Z4 in Japan and the Z4v in the USA). The new M5 has a 5-inch display compared with 5.5-inches on the Z3+ and the frame is 7.6 mm thick. The screen resolution comes in at 1,920 x 1.080 pixels and the rear is glass…
Even though the M5 lacks a bit in specs, it has a great upgraded camera module which is probably what Sony was referring to in yesterday’s tweet. Sony has said in the past that cameras are where it aims to make its phones stand out from the pack. The M5 has a 21.5 megapixel sensor and a fast F 2.2 aperture, so that pictures can be taken in a fraction of a second. The M5 can also shoot up to 5 x zoom with little loss in quality. And just like the C5 Ultra, the front camera has seen an upgrade to 13 megapixels.
Mail.ru claims the M5 phone has an 8-core MediaTek Helio X10 CPU at 2 GHz, 3 GB of RAM, 16 GB of storage and a microSD slot that can take the memory up to 128 GB.
There’s no word yet on pricing, but Sony’s M5 is expected to be around $400 and the C5 Ultra around $350.
With the Sony event slated for Monday, we won’t have long to wait to find out…
