Take a virtual tour of Abbey Road Studios with Google

Google’s new Inside Abbey Road project offers fans a magical mystery tour through the world’s most iconic recording studios via their smartphone, tablet or desktop.

Google has teamed up with Abbey Road studios to create a Street View style interactive walk through of the famous recording studios where the likes of the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Duran Duran and Radiohead recorded some of their biggest chart hits.

Inside Abbey Road allows fans to explore each of the three studios, taking a look inside Studio One, where scores for several famous films such as Raiders of the Lost Ark, Return of the Jedi, The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, and Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone were recorded.

Studio Two is where the Beatles managed to record most of Please Please Me in about 9.5 hours and Studio Three saw Pink Floyd put the finishing touches to Wish You Were Here and was also where some of the very first 5.1 surround mixes were created for the Beatles Anthology and U2, among other.

Narrated by Giles Martin, son of the legendary Beatles producer George Martin, the tour includes 360 panoramic views of each room with additional YouTube clips, audio and photos. Also included is a time lapse video of the London Symphony Orchestra which is well worth watching.

Tom Seymour, from Google’s Creative Lab said: “We’re always looking at how we can use technology to bring people closer to cultural icons and institutions around the world. With Inside Abbey Road, we wanted to open the doors to the iconic music studio for anyone in the world to step inside and experience the stories, the sounds, the people and the equipment that make Abbey Road Studios what it is today.”

Speaking of the project, Giles Martin added: “Abbey Road Studios has been a hive of creativity and source of world-class recordings for more than 80 years.

“The artists using the studios have sold countless millions of records and have helped create popular culture as we know it today. It’s an inspirational place and an honour for me to work there today. This collaboration with Google gives the outside world a great insight into the everyday workings of the studio and allows anyone to glimpse the magic that goes on inside the world’s most famous recording studio.”
