Haptic (“Games you can feel”) apps launch in Google Play Store

The haptic feedback in Android has always been a bit of a gimmick, but now Google is trying to highlight the feature somewhat, with a new Google Play store section that promotes “Games you can feel” on your smartphone or tablet device.

The new section in Google Play has 15 games, such as Angry Birds Friends, Drag Racing, NinjaHero Cats and some Grand Theft Auto titles, plus an air guitar app called Solo Air. Every app in the list was designed with tactile technology called TouchSense Engage from a company called Immersion, who are focused on combining the technology with mobile devices.

“Over the past few months, Immersion has worked closely with leading mobile game developers to customize tactile effects for their games, said Jason Patton, general manager and vice president of Content and Media at Immersion. “From this effort, we are seeing a whole new user experience emerge – one that is more immersive and engaging for mobile game players. Touch technology advances game design, enabling developers to add tactile effects to create a more in-depth gaming experience”.
