Tesla is reportedly planning to move up the launch of high-volume production of its Model 3 electric car to 2018, two years earlier than planned.
Reuters reports that Tesla’s founder Elon Musk has told suppliers he wants to make 100,000 vehicles next year and 400,000 in 2018.
The accelerated timetable will be difficult to achieve and potentially expensive according to some of those suppliers and industry analysts.
The most vehicles Tesla has made so far in a year was 50,000 in 2015 and there have been delivery delays for both its current models.
In addition Tesla has said the Model 3’s final design and engineering plan would be completed only in June, just 13 months ahead of the planned production startup.
