Popular torrent searche engine, Torrentz.eu has been abruptly taken offline.
The site was the world’s most visited search engine for finding torrents and pirated content.
Early on Friday, users began posting on Reddit and Twitter that the welcome text on the homepage had been changed to read: “Torrentz was a free, fast and powerful meta-search engine combining results from dozens of search engines.”
When users tried to search for torrents, text is displayed which reads: “Torrentz will always love you. Farewell.”
Instead it acts as a kind of massive search engine which searches all the other sites for whatever content you are looking for.
The abrupt closure of the site was first reported by Torrentfreak and comes just weeks after law enforcement officials from the US successfully managed to close Kickass Torrents, the world’s biggest torrent site and arrest the man believed to be the site’s owner.
It is unclear at this stage why Torrentz was suddenly taken down, with the site’s owner telling Torrentfreak they did not want to comment on the closure.
Downloading torrents is a popular way to share files and while it has some legitimate uses, it is mainly used for piracy and downloading copyrighted content such as movies, TV shows and music.
Users download the content by downloading a small torrent file of a movie or TV series.
This file then allows them to connect to large numbers of other users who have already downloaded the file.
The torrent works by downloading a small amount from each user simultaneously until the download is complete.
