Twitter has just announced it’s created a new set of special Wimbledon themed emoji, via the timeline of Serena Williams. The new emoji characters are intended to get fans talking about Wimbledon and engaged on social media whilst the event runs later this month.
Twitter’s Wimbledon emoji
Besides #Wimbledon (which brings up a tennis racquet), the new hashtags allow you to let the world know where you’re watching the games from: #TheQueue, #TheHill (Henman Hill) or #TheWorld (anywhere else).
Twitter states it wants to create “a friendly battle of conversation” between tennis fans wherever they are watching, and that new emoji characters will become available as the tournament progresses.
Live sports and events are extremely popular on Twitter, more so than on other social media sites such as Facebook and Instagram. It’s also trying to take advantage of special promotions on Periscope and Vine.
This isn’t the first time that Twitter has introduced its own, custom emoji. There were also some new symbols created to promote the new Star Wars film (The Force Awakens) set for release in December.
In the meantime, the Wimbledon tennis championship is due to kick off tomorrow in London, England, so get your Tweets ready…
