Update your Kindle by Tuesday or you won’t be able to connect to the Internet

If you own a Kindle that was bought before 2012, from tomorrow you will not be able to connect to the internet unless you install a critical update.

According to a post on Amazon’s help community, the new update is required for anyone using a pre-2012 Kindle that has not connected since 5 October 2015.

If you fail to update your device, you will not be able to access the Kindle Store, Amazon Cloud or any other services online, the company has warned.

“Customers using an outdated software version on Kindle e-readers, or that have not connected wirelessly since October 5, 2015, require an important software update by March 22, 2016, in order to continue to download Kindle books and use Kindle services,” Amazon said in its statement.

Users have also been warned that after March 22nd they will be forced to update the device manually by downloading a patch and installing it onto the device via a computer, which you can find out how to do here.

All Kindles should update automatically if they are connected to Wi-Fi when asleep. However, if your Kindle has been put away somewhere and hasn’t been used for a while, it may not be running the most up to date software.

You should make sure your device is fully updated, which you can do by selecting ‘Sync and check for items’ from the main menu.

If you are still unsure whether or not your Kindle needs updating, Amazon has provided a table detailing which versions of the Kindle requires the update:
