Users warned to avoid copycat ExtraTorrent sites that are appearing online

Just over a week after popular site ExtraTorrent suddenly shut down, a new site with the same name has appeared online.

The new version of the site is purportedly run by former employees and members of the ExtraTorrent community and offers the same [illegal]downloads and torrent links.

The group behind the new version told The Inquirer: “We have successfully resurrected it [ExtraTorrent] back to it’s glory at with all available data.

“It’s live and new data is continuously being updated. Some small features are not yet working and we are getting it fixed as we speak.”

The Inquirer also reports that the same group have previously been responsible for relaunching versions of other torrent sites including KickAss Torrents and The Pirate Bay.

However, those behind the original version of ExtraTorrent have warned people against using copycat sites.

When ExtraTorrent announced it was closing down, visitors to the site were met with a message which read:

“ExtraTorrent with all mirrors goes offline.. We permanently erase all data.

“Stay away from fake ExtraTorrent websites and clones. Thx to all ET supporters and torrent community. ET was a place to be….”

Tech site Torrent Freak also hit out at the ‘new’ site saying it has absolutely nothing to do with the original ExtraTorrent and is nothing more than a clone of The Pirate Bay.

While the intentions of are not thought to be malicious, users could be lured to the site under false pretenses, Torrent Freak noted.

Anyway, it all seems like a bit of a mess, with some reports saying the copycat site is ExtraTorrent resurrected, while others claiming it is all a bit of a scam.

Either way, it’s probably best to follow the advice and avoid copycat ExtraTorrent sites.
