WhatsApp, the popular instant messaging app that was bought by Facebook for $19 billion in February 2014, now has more than 700 million users.
The astounding figure was announced by the company’s co-founder and CEO Jan Koum on Facebook this week. Apparently, more than 30 billion messages are sent using the service every day, as well as hundreds of millions of videos and photos shared within the app.
WhatsApp adds 500 million users in two years
The chart below (from Statista.com), shows WhatsApp’s rapid progress from less than 200 million users just two years ago to 700 million today. Since the company last announced its user base figures in August last year, they’ve managed to add another 100 million users.
WhatsApp grows quicker than Facebook
WhatsApp has grown quicker than its parent company Facebook. Between March 2009 and April 2011, Facebook took 25 months to grow its user base from 200 to 700 million but WhatsApp did so in just 21 months. It’s probably just a matter of time before WhatsApp reaches the 1 billion user mark – judging by the statistics, perhaps within the space of a year it will reach that milestone figure.
As you can see in the chart below, WhatsApp is most popular in the Middle East and Africa, and Latin America countries but has a much smaller share in Asia and North America.
Line popular in Thailand
In Thailand, WhatsApp not as popular as competing service Line which is owned by Japanese company Naver. Line unsurprisingly has the most users in its home country of Japan (54 million users), followed by Thailand with 33 million and Indonesia with 30 million.
In October of 2014, Line claimed that they had 560 million users, still way short of the WhatsApp figure, but pretty impressive nevertheless.
