YouTube to undergo major redesign as Google experiments with new Dark Theme


Google has begun testing a new layout for YouTube.

The tech giant says it wants YouTube to be more user friendly and to have a more simple and consistent design.

Google also officially confirmed the availability of a new Dark Theme, which lets you change from YouTube classic white and red theme to black theme.

Google says the new Dark Theme will help to reduce glare and should make for more comfortable viewing for when watching videos at night or in a dark room.

YouTube’s Dark Theme was first revealed last month when it was spotted by an eagle eyed developer, although it take a fair bit of fiddling to enable it.

However, the Dark Theme is now much easier to activate and can be done so by visiting

So far Google has said that only the desktop site will is being redesigned, but if feedback from the new look are positive, expect them to become available on the YouTube mobile app too.

“Starting today, we’re opening up a preview of the new design to a small group of people from all around the world so we can get feedback,” read the official YouTube blog.

“While we hope you’ll love what we’ve been working on, we’re also really excited to involve the YouTube community so we can make the site even better before sharing it more broadly.”
